Ras.I has been a Governor of Chelsea and Westminster Hospital since January 2023. In this role he was elected to represent the constituency of the rest of England.
The role requires him to employ active listening and understanding to better understand his constituents, which then allows him to represent the voices of young people to the hospital trust. His particular interest is looking at young people’s experiences at the hospitals, as well as understanding and tackling racially based health inequities.
As the only black governor, he has played a key role in increasing participation of marginalised voices.
More recently he pushed to become the only nonlead governor on an NHS board to appoint an NED to the North-West Hospital Acute Collaborative, which has a total population coverage of 1.2 million, and as the only black voice on the panel he made sure to champion the unique benefits which come from having representation at board level.
Ras.I is a Commonwealth Youth parliamentarian and the sole delegate of the United Kingdom. Here, he represents British young people at the Commonwealth youth parliament in Trinidad and Tobago.
Most recently he gave a talk to the assistant attorney general of Sri Lanka and parliamentary clerks on connecting with disenfranchised young people, and was subsequently invited to deliver a talk to the youth general assembly in Sri Lanka.
Where do you see yourself in 10 years?
“My underlying drive is to see the lives of Britain’s impoverished, changed and transformed. I see myself becoming an MP, and a bit later on the end goal.”
