As General Secretary of teachers’ union NASUWT, Dr Patrick Roach was firing on all cylinders in the run-up to the General Election – leading the campaign for new deals on pay, workload, working time and wellbeing to tackle crises of low morale and teacher shortages.

Appointed to the job in 2020, he is the first black General Secretary of NASUWT – and only the second black general secretary of a major union in British history. The former lecturer has long been an outspoken critic of the Conservative Government’s educational, social and economic policies, including the lack of affordable housing.

At the union’s annual conference, Dr Roach accused the then Government of ushering in an era where “teaching is no longer a sustainable way to make a living”. NASUWT polls suggested threequarters of members in England had seriously considered leaving their jobs in the past year, and nine in ten were worried about their current financial situation.

Prior to his career at the NASUWT, Dr Roach led a range of programmes focusing on teacher education, working with disaffected and excluded young people, and engaging parents and local communities.
