Aji Akokomi is the founder of the Michelin-starred restaurant Akoko — an “immersive experience” that takes diners on a journey through different West African regions, “exploring history and unveiling the rich tapestry of flavours.”
The high-end Fitzrovia establishment earned its prestigious Michelin rating in 2024. The Michelin Guide praises Akoko for its tasting menu format and “refined, beautifully balanced dishes underpinned by quality ingredients — many of them cooked over fire.” The jollof rice is described as “truly knock-out.”
In November 2023, Aji opened his second restaurant, Akara, beneath the arches in Borough Yards. Named after the black-eyed bean fritter with roots in West Africa, which features on the concise menu, the restaurant champions traditional flavours of the region in a stylish and relaxed setting.
A former IT project manager, Aji spent many years hosting supper clubs and entertaining friends at home. In 2017, he took the plunge to change careers, enrolling in Leith’s Cookery School’s 10-week Essential Cooking course. In 2018, he embarked on a culinary expedition across West Africa, visiting Gambia, Senegal, Ghana, and Nigeria to discover and study traditional cooking techniques.
Aji spent time with family in Ibadan, Nigeria, working in his mother’s bakery and learning about Agege bread, a popular bread eaten across Nigeria. From there, he explored the history of jollof rice in Dakar, Senegal, which inspired one of Akoko’s signature dishes.
He remains heavily involved in the day-to-day running of Akoko, with heritage and culture at the heart of every dish.
